If you're playing the Mac or Linux versions of Don't Starve and your game recognizes the wired Xbox 360 controller as a "generic controller" and shows generic button prompts instead of the proper Xbox 360 buttons, that's because the game is looking for the Xbox controller driver; which is not officially supported on Mac or Linux OS'.
